Why We Choose to Be Calgary Flames Fans: A Deep Dive into Fan Adoration and Identity

Flames Unfiltered hosts, Brad Burud and Kyle Lewis, take listeners on an introspective journey to explore the very essence of their fandom for the Calgary Flames. Delving into the reasons behind their allegiance and what sustains their passion, this episode sheds light on why two fans, far removed geographically from Calgary, find themselves devoted to this hockey team.

Key Takeaways

  • The origins of hockey fandom can be unexpected, often shaped by a series of seemingly trivial events or decisions.
  • Emotional investment in a team transcends mere geographical ties and involves deep personal connections and experiences.
  • Retaining team loyalty, even during challenging times, highlights the unique bond fans forge with their chosen teams.

The Serendipitous Journey to Becoming a Flames Fan

Unexpected Beginnings: The Jersey on Sale

For Brad Burud, the journey to becoming a Calgary Flames fan began in an unexpected manner. He recalls a seemingly trivial decision as a teenager while shopping for hockey gear in North Dakota. Noticing a discounted Flames jersey, he opted for it over others, including those of the Quebec Nordiques and Minnesota North Stars. Burud reflects, “And I grabbed the white home jersey and thought, alright, this is the one I’m going with.” This spontaneous choice laid the foundation for his enduring fandom.

Brad’s story highlights a significant theme: the origins of sports fandom often begin with serendipitous moments. This experience not only anchored his allegiance but also created a pathway leading to vivid memories and strong emotional investment. He notes, “The jersey clinched me for that year and led me up till 1986 when they went to the finals.” For Brad, what began as an impulse buy turned into a lifelong passion.

Emotional Investment Beyond Geography

Building Connections Through Shared Passion

Kyle Lewis’s journey to Flames fandom shows the powerful connection that can form between a person and a team regardless of location. Situated in New Brunswick, Lewis describes the Flames as “a team I’ve cared about for years,” despite his physical distance from Calgary. Geographic separation did not diminish his passion. Instead, it cemented his loyalty, as late-night game viewings became his “time to watch my hockey team.”

This emotional investment transcends geography and touches on a broader implication for sports fans: the bond with a team often goes beyond physical proximity. As Kyle notes, “I could move to Edmonton, North Dakota, California, or Ireland…it doesn’t matter where I go. The connection remains strong.” This illustrates the universal appeal sports teams hold, connecting individuals across varied locales, and fostering a sense of belonging in a community united by passion.

Sustaining Fandom Through Ups and Downs

Rider for Life: Plenty of Downs, But Forever Hopeful

The Calgary Flames have not been strangers to both triumphant and challenging times, yet unwavering loyalty remains a consistent theme among their fans. Brad reflects on the lean periods, acknowledging, “All in all, if you think about the time period that we’ve been Flames fans, it’s been pretty lean.” Despite these struggles, his commitment has never wavered.

This theme of loyalty, even during hardships, speaks to the broader resilience of sports fandom. Through periods of mediocrity and management uncertainty, fans like Brad and Kyle remain steadfast due to their historical and emotional investment in the team. Brad articulates this with a sense of hopefulness for the future: “I just hope someday that we’re able to see the Flames win the Stanley Cup.” It’s this optimism and passion that preserves the spirit of fandom, even when faced with adversity.

Reflecting on the Past and the Path Forward

Both Brad and Kyle’s stories underscore the multidimensional nature of being a sports fan. What begins as a seemingly small choice or fascination can evolve into a lifetime of devotion. Their experiences illustrate the unique journey each fan takes—from the serendipity of an initial attraction to the challenges of maintaining faith through rough seasons.

Whether it’s the spontaneous selection of a discounted jersey or the quiet enjoyment of late-night games, being a Calgary Flames fan is an immersive experience. It transcends mere numbers and victories on the scoreboard and enters the realm of identity, where each interaction with the team builds a deeper connection. The Flames may face ups and downs, but Brad and Kyle’s unwavering dedication proves that the journey and the emotional ties forged along the way are the true victories.

The lasting impact of their fandom reflects broader themes that resonate with sports fans everywhere: the randomness of how fandom begins, the power of emotional investment that holds fans together beyond geographic restrictions, and the loyalty that endures through the inevitable highs and lows. In a world where teams like the Calgary Flames serve as a rallying point, fans continually find reasons to engage, support, and cherish their journeys.
